If you call the woods,
I can call the fire.
It was there
That I saw
A deer through the trees
It sipped from the lake
And ran off full of knowledge
And water.
I got the feeling
The lights would blind me
When we got home.
So I brushed away the snow
Listened to the crackle of the flame
And waited for her.
She came up to me from behind
And put her hands on my chest
Her skin
Was as soft as the untouchable air
That surrounds us
Transparent
And listless
Constantly out of reach
Yet always in eye's view.
We sipped the tomato soup she brought
To fight the cold
That we've been fighting our whole lives
She tried to speak
But her voice broke apart
When she tried to pronounce my name
In fear of ruining the moment.
I just rubbed her feet, tickled her toes
And made her forget about what was easy to forget
Let's forget about the mail at home
And the bills we could never pay
Just stare in the fire
Just stare in the flame
Just stare into my heart, lover,
And maybe I can do the same.
